Thessaloniki
Greece’s second city, on the Thermaic Gulf in Central Macedonia. Widely considered Greece’s food capital — better than Athens by most Greeks’ own reckoning — and the city with more UNESCO-listed Byzantine monuments than anywhere outside Istanbul.
Key facts
- Region: Central Macedonia, northern Greece
- Airport: SKG (“Makedonia”), 16 km from the centre — taxi €25–35 (25–45 min), bus line 78 ~€2 (40–60 min); airport metro still under construction
- Character: Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman and Sephardic layers; the 1917 Great Fire spared only the Ano Poli upper town
- Prices: noticeably cheaper than Athens or the islands; a full ouzeri spread runs €15–22/person
- State-site tickets (winter, 1 Nov–31 Mar, checked 2026-10-17): €15 combined 3-day ticket (White Tower + Rotunda + Archaeological + Byzantine Culture museums; some sources add more sites — confirm at purchase); Heptapyrgion €10; winter hours run ~08:30–15:30 with museum Tuesdays closed; all state sites close 25 March
What it’s known for
- Roman & Byzantine core: the Rotunda (4th-c. gold mosaics), Arch of Galerius (Kamara), Agios Dimitrios basilica (patron saint, built over Roman baths), Roman Forum
- Waterfront: Aristotelous Square → Nea Paralia promenade (5 km of public art) → White Tower
- Upper town (Ano Poli): Ottoman-era lanes, Byzantine Walls, Heptapyrgion fortress, Trigonion Tower viewpoint (“the city’s most beautiful balcony”)
- Markets: restored Modiano (1922 covered hall, now a curated food court) and open-air Kapani
- Ladadika: old olive-oil warehouse district by the port, the densest restaurant/bar quarter
Signature food
Bougatsa (custard phyllo, the city’s alarm clock — Bougatsa Bantis near Modiano is the classic counter), koulouri sesame rings, souvlaki, trigona Panoramatos (syrup-soaked custard cones), Thermaic Gulf mussels (order mydia saganaki), and the meze-with-tsipouro ritual at a tsipouradiko. Our ranked top-20 shortlist for eating well here (no fish/seafood, casual-first, two splurges) lives in thessaloniki-restaurants.
As a day-trip base
Arguably the best day-trip base in Greece: Meteora (~2.5–3 h each way, the standout), Vergina royal tombs (~1 h, UNESCO), Mount Olympus (~1.5 h), Halkidiki beaches (~1 h+, but a summer destination — skip in early spring). Pella, birthplace of Alexander, is the quickest at ~40 min.
Timing
Best visited spring through autumn. For a late-March/early-April visit, see thessaloniki-in-early-spring and the filed brief thessaloniki-trip-march-2027.
