Trip Plan: Thessaloniki, Sun 21 – Thu 25 March 2027
Replanned 2026-10-17 from the original brief (“late March / early April”) into a full plan with real flights and lodging picks. Window chosen over the alternatives — see [Why this window]. Draws on thessaloniki and thessaloniki-in-early-spring. All prices dated; re-check before booking.
Trip summary
- Route/dates: London Stansted → Thessaloniki (SKG), Sun 21 March – Thu 25 March 2027 (4 nights), Ryanair FR2567/FR2568.
- Verdict: an almost perfectly-shaped window — the Independence Day parade falls mid-trip, museums close only on Tuesday (the Meteora day) and 25 March (the parade day), and winter museum pricing still applies.
- Budget estimate: ~£575–820 per person all-in (midpoint ~£700), two sharing.
- Eating: the ranked top-20 shortlist for this trip is thessaloniki-restaurants — splurges Iliopetra and Charoupi (both book ahead); everything else walk-in casual.
Why this window beat the alternatives
| Window | Flights pp (2026-10-17) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sun 21 → Thu 25 (4 nt) | £248.98 | parade Thu mid-trip; cheapest workable combo |
| Mon 22 → Fri 26 (4 nt) | £438.98 | same shape, +£190 for nothing |
| Sun 21 → Sun 28 (7 nt) | £152.98 | cheapest, but 7 nights ≠ the 4 days asked for |
Getting there & around
- Flights (live quotes 2026-10-17, per person): out Sun 21 Mar 06:00→11:10
(£72.99); return Thu 25 Mar 20:40→22:10 (£175.99). Total £248.98 pp before
seat/bag extras. Ryanair runs this route Mon/Thu/Fri/Sun — details in
raw/articles/ryanair-stn-skg-fares-march-2027.md. ⚠️ Prices will move; book when the dates are locked. easyJet (LGW) and BA also fly the route ~5×/week — not priced. - SKG → centre (16 km): bus X78 ~€2 (40–60 min) or taxi €25–35 (25–45 min).
- In town: everything central is walkable; Ano Poli is a steep uphill walk.
- Passport (UK): issued <10 years at entry, valid ≥3 months after departure; EES biometrics active at the border; re-check ETIAS launch status ~Feb 2027.
Where to stay — pick: Ladadika / Aristotelous
Mid-level, walkable to everything. Rates below are shoulder-season quotes from guide sources (checked 2026-10-17); late March is low season — likely cheaper; confirm for exact dates.
| Hotel | Area | Guide rate/night (double) |
|---|---|---|
| Capsis Hotel Thessaloniki ★★★★ (pick) | Ladadika edge | €75–115 |
| City Hotel ★★★★ | near Egnatia, 10 min walk to waterfront | €70–160 |
| Electra Palace ★★★★★ (outlier/splurge) | ON Aristotelous Square | €140–210 |
4 nights at Capsis-type rates: €300–460/room ≈ £130–200 pp at low-season pricing.
Day-by-day
Winter museum hours rule this plan: state sites open 08:30/09:00 and shut 15:30–17:00 — mornings are museum time, afternoons are neighbourhoods.
Sun 21 — arrive, waterfront, White Tower
- Land 11:10; X78 or taxi; drop bags at the hotel by ~13:00.
- White Tower (€4 winter, closes 15:30, last entry 15:10) — do it on arrival if the flight is on time; fallback slot Monday afternoon.
- Sunset walk: Nea Paralia promenade sculptures → Aristotelous Square.
- Dinner in Ladadika (first ouzeri night — meze + tsipouro, ~€15–22 pp).
Mon 22 — the two big museums (buy the combined ticket)
- Museum of Byzantine Culture 08:30–15:30 (€5 winter) → Archaeological Museum 09:00–17:00 (€8 winter).
- Buy the €15 combined 3-day ticket (White Tower + Rotunda + both museums; some sources add Roman Agora/Galerius complex — confirm at the desk which version is sold).
- Evening: tsipouradiko crawl off Ladadika’s edges.
Tue 23 — Meteora day trip (museums closed Tuesday anyway)
- Guided tour from Thessaloniki, ~12–13 h door-to-door (2025–26 pricing €55–79 pp — ⚠️ re-verify and book ahead). Alternatively train via Paleofarsalos (~3 h each way).
- Easy recovery dinner: souvlaki near the market quarter.
Wed 24 — Ano Poli, walls, markets
- Morning: up through the Byzantine Walls → Heptapyrgion fortress (€10, 08:30–15:30) → Trigonion Tower viewpoint (“the city’s most beautiful balcony”) → Vlatadon Monastery and Agios Nikolaos Orphanos (free churches).
- Lunch: bougatsa at Bougatsa Bantis, then Kapani + Modiano markets — deliberately today, not Thursday (holiday closures).
- Afternoon: Rotunda + Arch of Galerius (combined ticket) if not done Monday; Agios Dimitrios basilica (free).
- Evening: Aristotelous, trigona Panoramatos pastry stop, farewell dinner.
Thu 25 — Independence Day parade, then fly
- Waterfront parade (student + military, by the White Tower) — typically late morning; stake out a spot early. Museums/state sites ALL closed today; churches open
- Lunch: parade-day tradition is bakaliaros skordalia (fried cod) — but we don’t eat fish, so pick a meat/vegetarian meze spot instead; holiday closures mean some kitchens run reduced menus, so reserve ahead.
- Leave the centre ~17:45 by taxi for the 20:40 flight (parade crowds slow traffic).
- ⚠️ Confirm parade time locally near the date.

Risks & gotchas
- 25 March closures: every state museum/monument shuts (built into this plan), and shops/banks close; waterfront crowds peak mid-morning.
- Winter museum hours (shut by ~15:30) kill museum afternoons — the plan front-loads them; don’t swap days casually (Tue/Thu are the only non-museum days).
- White Tower on arrival day is tight (last entry 15:10) — the Monday fallback is deliberate.
- Combined-ticket contents vary by source (4 vs 5 sites) — check before buying.
- Prices flip on 1 April: summer hours (open to 20:00) but tickets roughly double (€10 Byzantine Museum, €8 White Tower). Staying pre-1 April keeps winter rates.
- Late return into STN (22:10) — pre-book the train/taxi home.
- ETIAS: not operating as of Oct 2026, launch likely 2027 — re-check ~7–8 weeks out.
- Free-museum Sundays do NOT help this trip: the scheme is first-Sunday-of-month Nov–Mar per the official source (some guides say first+third — either way the last one is 7 March 2027). Corrects the earlier brief, which implied a late-March Sunday might catch free entry.
