Thessaloniki in Early Spring (late March – early April)
What the window around end of March / early April actually looks like in thessaloniki.
Weather
- Temperatures: days ~15–19°C, nights ~5–8°C. Early April is warmer than late March (April highs average ~19°C). Record extremes range from a 25°C March day to near-freezing April nights, so layers matter.
- Rain: roughly 36–64 mm over 8–12 days per month depending on the source — pack a light rain layer; showers are usually short, occasionally thundery.
- Daylight: ~13 hours by early April. Sea is cold (~13–16°C) — not beach weather.
- Verdict: genuinely good city-break weather — mild walking conditions, everything open, few crowds. Not swimming weather.
Holidays & events in the window
- 25 March — Greek Independence Day (also the Annunciation, a double holiday). In Thessaloniki this is a big deal: a student + military parade along the waterfront (Meg. Alexandrou Ave, by the White Tower), navy ships in the harbour, church services at Agios Dimitrios and Hagia Sophia. Traditional dish of the day: bakaliaros skordalia (fried cod with garlic-potato mash). Expect crowds on the waterfront and some shop closures; banks/post offices shut.
- Easter: Western Easter 2027 falls on 28 March, but Greece celebrates Orthodox Easter on 2 May 2027 — so this window has no Easter holidays, closures, or crowd surge. Good news for logistics.
- Free museum entry (corrected 2026-10-17): the official culture.gov.gr scheme is free entry on the first Sunday of each month, 1 Nov – 31 Mar only (some secondary sources claim first + third Sundays; the official page does not). The last free Sunday before the scheme ends is 7 March 2027 — no late-March/early-April date catches it. (An earlier version of this page implied otherwise.)
- Holiday closures hit the monuments, not the city: on 25 March every state museum/monument closes (White Tower, Rotunda, both big museums, Heptapyrgion) while shops shut and the parade runs — the city itself is at its liveliest. Winter ticket prices (roughly half of summer’s) apply through 31 March; state sites also run winter hours (roughly 08:30–15:30, Tuesdays closed for the museums).
Entry requirements (2027 outlook)
- Passport must be <10 years old and valid ≥3 months beyond departure (Schengen rule).
- Visa-exempt nationals (US, UK, CA, AU…): no visa for ≤90 days in 180. The EU’s EES biometric border system is already operating (face/fingerprints at the border — allow extra time). ETIAS (€20 online pre-authorisation) was NOT operating as of October 2026; a 2027 launch is considered likely but has no announced date — check before booking-era planning, ~€7–8 weeks before the trip.
- Visa-required nationals need a Schengen visa (~€80) from the Greek embassy.
- If travel dates flex, note 1 May (Easter Saturday, peak season start) and 3 May (Easter Monday, holiday) in 2027.
