Tenerife at Christmas

Season notes for a late-December trip to tenerife, mostly drawn from everythingtenerife.co.uk’s Christmas guide (checked Oct 2026).

Weather reality

  • South coast: 19–23 °C by day, 13–17 °C at night, sea 21 °C — swimming is normal, not heroic.^[raw/articles/tenerife-december-weather-aemet.md] December is actually the wettest month in Tenerife’s record, but south-coast rain arrives as short cloudy spells that often clear by early afternoon. Pack a jacket for evenings and a rain plan-B.
  • Up on Teide (2,356 m+): winter — 8–9 °C mean at Izaña, snow and ice common, roads and the cable car close with storms. Any Teide day needs a morning-of weather check.

What the locals actually celebrate

  • Nochebuena (24 Dec) is the big one: late family dinner, midnight mass. Towns are busy and family-oriented; resort restaurants that stay open fill up — book.
  • Christmas Day (25 Dec) is quiet and family-first. In the resorts everything tourist runs as normal (beaches full of Brits); several hotel Christmas buffets take non-guests (~€35/head recently). The Teide cable car is closed this one day a year.
  • 26–27 Dec: normal service, tourist-busy.
  • New Year’s Eve (31 Dec) and Three Kings (5–6 Jan) are the next spikes — outside our dates.

Christmas atmosphere in the south

  • Adeje old town (up the hill from the coast): lights switched on end of November, Christmas market through most of December, belén (nativity) blessing in Plaza de España.
  • Los Cristianos / Costa Adeje seafront: full Christmas-light dress, busy promenades.
  • Santa Cruz and La Laguna run the island’s biggest markets/light shows (late Nov–6 Jan) — a 50–70 min bus ride from the south if we want a big-city evening.

Gotchas

  • Book everything early. Christmas week is peak-peak: flights jump (early-Dec Ryanair seats from £15.99 go to £130 by 23 Dec), and Los Cristianos apartments are December’s most expensive and scarcest inventory (£980/week average on clickstay).
  • Supermarkets close 24 Dec afternoon and on 25 Dec; 1 Jan similar. Plan Christmas morning breakfast shopping for the 23rd.
  • Restaurants: even casual places fill in Christmas week — book dinners a day ahead.
  • No white Christmas anywhere on the coast — the “snow” is up on Teide.
