Tenerife
The largest of the Canary Islands, off North Africa. Spain (Schengen), euro, Spanish + widespread English in the resorts. Year-round destination whose winter trade is exactly what a tenerife-at-christmas trip is built on: while mainland Europe freezes, the south coast sits at 19–23 °C with a 21 °C sea.
The two souths
Tenerife splits by a mountain spine into two coasts with different characters:
- South (Los Cristianos, Playa de las Américas, Costa Adeje): the dry, sunny side — resort towns, golden-sand beaches, most of the island’s holiday infrastructure, and the warmest, most reliable weather from December to February. This is the base for a winter-sun or beach-led trip; see tenerife-christmas-2026 for a worked example.
- North (Puerto de la Cruz, La Orotava, Santa Cruz, Anaga): greener, more local, cloudier and cooler — the food and culture side, stronger guachinche tradition.
Signature experiences
- Mount Teide (3,715 m) — Spain’s highest peak, mid-island. Cable car from 2,356 m (9:00–17:00 in winter, last ascent 16:00; closed 25 December). Snow, ice and wind close the upper station often in winter — check the operator’s morning status before driving up. Summit access above the upper station needs a (free) permit.
- Beaches — Playa de las Vistas and Los Cristianos beach (golden sand, breakwaters, swimmable in December); Las Teresitas near Santa Cruz; El Médano for wind.
- Food — Canarian cooking is land-and-potato based at heart: papas arrugadas con mojo, grilled goat’s cheese, carne de cabra, conejo en salmorejo, gofio. Guachinches (rustic, family-run, house wine) are the cheap-and-honest end; the south’s best eating stretches from Los Cristianos harbour to La Caleta; our ranked top-20 (no-fish filter, 17 of 20 in the south corridor) is in tenerife-restaurants. (Note for us: skip the harbour fish tables.)
Getting there & around
- Direct 4.5 h flights from all London airports into Tenerife South (TFS), which is only 15–20 min from the southern resorts (taxi €25–35, TITSA bus 111/343 ~€3.70).
- Tenerife North (TFN) serves the mainland/Canary carrier routes — not relevant from the UK.
- The south coast is walkable/promenade-connected; a hire car only pays off for Teide + north-coast exploring. Buses (TITSA) reach Teide and the west but slowly.
Entry (UK passport)
Visa-free Schengen, 90 days in any 180; EES biometric registration on entry/exit. Same rules as our Greece trips — see thessaloniki-in-early-spring for the checked detail. ETIAS not yet required as of Oct 2026.
